Microbiology is the scientific discipline that examines the fundamental structure and function of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts, and viruses, at various levels of biological organization. This field of study encompasses the investigation of microbes at the molecular level, focusing on their proteins and genetic material, as well as at the cellular level, encompassing cell biology and physiology. Additionally, microbiology explores the dynamics and interactions within microbial communities.

Microbiology is gaining increasing significance in the realms of science, medicine, industry, and society. This discipline is crucial as we strive to regulate microbial pathogens within our healthcare facilities and communities, while simultaneously leveraging an ever-expanding array of microorganisms in biotechnology industries. Microbiology is therefore an applied science, contributing to the fields of health and medicine through the study of pathogens, their epidemiology, and resistance to antimicrobial agents. Microorganisms are also extensively employed in the agriculture, food, and environmental sectors, such as in the remediation of oil spills.

This programme will facilitate the development of comprehensive knowledge and comprehension of microbiology at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels. Expanding upon this foundational understanding, you will acquire an extensive and detailed comprehension of specific areas of Microbiology that align with the research expertise and proficiencies within the school, guaranteeing instruction by preeminent authorities in their respective research domains.

Career Paths

There are numerous employment opportunities for individuals with a background in microbiology, particularly within the realm of hospital research and diagnostic laboratories. Furthermore, the widespread utilization of genetically modified microorganisms across the biotechnology sector, encompassing industries such as pharmaceuticals, food production, and brewing, has led to a significant demand for microbiology graduates. Additionally, a degree in the sciences can be leveraged for administrative positions within the civil service, pharmaceutical companies, food production, fermentation, and related industrial sectors.
